After the Sharktopus nonsense, Mac decides she's going to rest for a few days. She has a severely sprained ankle that really limits her ability to walk and sand is out of the question unless she wants to just make it worse. While it's frustrating to her, she doesn't mind being in the house for a few days and spending some time just reading books and keeping her own company, which she doesn't particularly mind.

She does, however, miss Jackson and hopes he'll be by to check on her and her stupid injury. She hears a knock at her cottage door and calls out so she doesn't have to get up.

"It's open! I'm in bed." Bed is the most comfortable place to lay around with books, after all, and Mac pushes her reading glasses up on her nose and squints at the tiny print.

Mac arches her hips up against his hand. "I think...I think I can make that happen." She always works best with a clear goal in mind and the promise he made is more than enough of a goal.

It's just stupid how much she likes that praise and Mac finishes and collapses back against the bed with a heavy sigh. "Oh my God and I told myself we wouldn't fuck today. Shows how much control I have."

Mac guesses it doesn't matter, considering they're both doing exactly what they want.

"We could always stop there?" He says, fondling her tits. "If you want."

"Hmm, maybe? If that's all right with you?" Navigating this arrangement (Mac isn't going to jinx it by calling it a relationship) is unlike anything she has ever done before.

It isn't exactly alright with him but he's gone without before and he'll accommodate. He nods, leaning forward to press a chaste kiss against the bare akin of her chest.

Mac turns and curls up against him. "Will you stay for a little while? No obligation or anything."

"Of course," he says, ignoring any reaction his body might have been having moments before, wrapping his arm around her. "No obligation."

"I'm secretly somewhat of a sap," Mac admits, embarrassed. "I know it's supposed to just be sex but I've never been good at sticking to that. I'm terrible at it."

"I'm not sure that it's supposed to be anything," he says, idly trailing his fingers down her bare spine. "So why don't you tell me what you want and then we'll see where we end up?"

"Oh you know I'm terrible at telling you what I want." It's teasing but there's truth in it because what she wants more than anything is to be cared for and wanted and putting boundaries on something means risking rejection.

"It would just be nice to have someone genuinely care about me, is all. I wanted Nikola to but he seems content to fuck me and still live with his boyfriend, whom he actually loves. I think he really only cares because I sort of look like Dr. Zimmerman and have breasts."

"And what you're worried about now is that I'm only here for the sex, too?" He huffs out a breath. "Darlin', the sex is a welcome by-product, but I also kinda like the conversation. You ain't gettin' rid of me yet."

"Most men are only here for the sex," Mac points out. "And that is not just with me, that is basically how it works period. You're all wired differently from us."

He rolls his eyes at that.

"I was married, once," he points out. "And it wasn't me that ended it."

"Oh," Mac says softly. She had known he was married but she thought it was mutual based on the way he talked about the woman and this is a shock to her. "I thought Will wanted to marry me but I don't think he did. He bought that ring just to rub it in that I was the one who ruined our relationship."

"Well that just makes him an asshole, doesn't it?" he says, stroking her skin. "Susan...I don't know. We couldn't live with each other but we sure as hell couldn't live without each other. None of it was easy."
